Today’s first post features a series of early performances from James Taylor, the centerpiece of which is his concert on September 13, 1970, 43 years ago today, for BBC Radio. Earlier that year, Taylor had released his breakthrough album, Sweet Baby James. That disc would rise to #3 on the Billboard charts as would the single from the disc, Fire and Rain, a song about Taylor's experience in psychiatric institutions and the suicide of his friend, Suzanne Schnerr. The James Taylor/Grateful Dead Connection
Best I can tell, The Grateful Dead and James Taylor rarely, if ever crossed paths. Yet while the 2 moved in separate circles, that didn’t stop Jerry Garcia from borrowing a tune from JT’s inventory. The Jerry Garcia Band frequently played a cover of Taylor’s How Sweet It Is during live performances, In fact, when Garcia played the Oakland Coliseum on October 31, 1992, after recovering from another serious illness, he thanked his fans for their support by opening the show with JTs classic tune.
