Not to brag, but my style peaks in the fall. I love a sundress as much as the next person, but bundling up in a bunch of cozy sweaters is my favorite thing, maybe ever. And to make it even harder on my (very small) wardrobe, I have a massive crush on fall 2021’s sweater trends. Like, it’s a problem! Someone stop me before my savings account balance hits zero.
But how could you blame me when the sweaters are this cute? The most in-demand styles run the gamut from bold two-tone options to sheer, breezy alternatives. And I couldn’t possibly forget to mention the chunkier quarter-zip picks that look like they’d be more at home on a New England college campus than in the big city.
There are also some returning trends, too! If you recall the whole sweater bra trend from last year, then I’m happy to report that you can still find a bunch of adorable matching bra-and-cardigan sets that beg the question: “Will I ever wear a real bra ever again?” The answer is no. Oh—and sweater vests are still very much a thing this season. But instead of being oversized, this season’s iterations have gotten the tennis club treatment. They’re cropped, collared and are going to look so cute paired with a pleated mini skirt.
If you’re ready to ditch your cropped tanks and replace them with some very cushy knits, you’ve come to the right place. Read on to check out all of this season’s biggest trends from all of your favorite sites, like Mango, Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue. Happy shopping!
Contrast Cardis
Why choose one color when you can wear two? Two-toned knitwear is everywhere right now. You can pick from options that feature two coordinating colors or choose a cardigan that highlights two shades from entirely different color families. This option from STAUD, for instance, features two very fall-appropriate pink hues.
Thin Ribbed
While chunky sweaters were everywhere last year, the fashion set is leaning toward sleeker, longer options in 2021. If you want to wear ribbed clothing from head to toe, rock a longline cardigan like this one from Open Edit with a coordinating pair of knit trousers. Seriously—you’ll never reach for your sweatshirt and sweatpants ever again.
Cut It Out
It’s no secret that cut-outs dominated our collective spring and summer wardrobes and I am happy to report that the sexy detail is still going strong for fall. But instead of showing up on midi skirts and dresses, cut-outs have made their way onto the humble turtleneck sweater—and have totally transformed it in the process. This Kelly green pick from Eloquii will keep you warm on a night out while still looking majorly cute, too.
Collar Me Maybe
No, this sweater isn’t a part of a school uniform. Collared sweaters—particularly collared sweater vests like this option from Reformation—are truly the layering basics that your closet has been in desperate need of. Why? Because they work well under other crewneck options without adding bulk and look totally great on their own, too.
Zip It Up
Part Sporty Spice part Yale-era Rory Gilmore, quarter- and half-zip sweaters are this season’s preppiest trend. While stiped options are everywhere these days, invest in a monochrome version like this white one from Varley. Your off-duty leggings look will look instantly dressed up. You’ll look so fresh, so clean (clean).
Sheer Genius
Does it ever feel too warm outside for an actual sweater, but too cold for you to go out with nothing on? That’s where sheer sweaters like this one from Mango come in. Wear ’em over a tank or tee during the day and then over a lace bralette for a night-out ‘fit that won’t leave you freezing by the time you get home. Or, just keep one in your tote bag for when the weather changes on a dime.
Set It Up
Wearing a matching sweater-and-bra set is the secret to getting dressed in a snap—and looking like you put in way more effort than you actually did. Sure, you can just wear a neutral sweater, but in the words of Nicki Minaj: “Who wants to look simple when you can look stunning?”. I don’t think she was actually talking about this printed cardigan or the matching tank from Urban Outfitters when she said that, but it works nonetheless.
